Byun Baekhyun's story is one of theme of redemption and perseverance. But if you ask Byun Baekhyun if any of this is true, he will outright deny it, claiming that he comes from humble (if not even sadder) beginnings and that he merely "gets by" in life by clocking in and working hard.
His humble roots begin in Yongsan, if he had any roots to trace back to. All he knows from before his birth and before the fall of the earth, his mother was a hard working, single, and had to make ends meet by herself. She was an independent woman because she had to be. Adolescence was rough on her and her parents, choosing to leave and set out on her own the moment she was legal to do so, settling near the red light district (mostly because it had the cheapest housing). All Baekhyun can remember from his mother is that she worked double jobs - a barista in the morning, sleeping while the sun was its highest, and reported to a pimp once the street lights came on. It was easier money than, say, waiting to be hired as a secretary hand at a more .. er .. proper? place.
But when the routinely pregnancy tests came back positive, Byun Hana knew she had to leave. The red light district was weakening by the minute; the pimps were getting desperate. The moment her pregnancy test came back positive, she was let go immediately. (More like thrown out* but Baekhyun didn't need to hear that part of the story). With enough money in her savings, Byun Hana moves to a better place for her and her baby, soon giving birth to a baby boy in Songpa's best hospital. She started over because she had to, not even looking back once. Not when she has a healthy boy occupying her time and with a proper secretarial job that Old Lady Kim was so kind enough to get for her. "Please let me help you dear, you're like the daughter I never had."
Baekhyun was at a healthy seven months when the apocalypse fell. With his mother established in Songpa already, the move only secured Baekhyun's future in Korea's most influential disctrict. Byun Hana's plans to give her son a better life was in effect. He had opportunities here that she could've only dreamt about when she was younger.
The hospital was a place that Baekhyun can vouch for as his second home. His mother fell into a series of illnesses not necessarily from the radiation, but more of a delayed onset from her job as a prostitute. To Baekhyun, mommy was just sick and the hospital was the place where magic happens to undo it all. And the hospital never failed him. His mother always came back with color on her face and standing tall, ready to take him to school. But it was also then that Baekhyun decides: when I grow up, I want to help bring the magic to sick ummadeul too.
Baekhyun was 14 years old when his mother's immune system finally gave in. It was one of the darkest days, if not the darkest day, of Baekhyun's life. His mother told him one thing before her hand fell cold in Baekhyun's tight grasp, "Fly, Baekhyun." And he didn't need an explanation from her to know what she meant. Fly. Always look up. There's always light in dark places. And he could be that light for others, as he was for her.
At 15, with the support of Old Lady Kim, Baekhyun entered the training grounds to become a nurse. A doctor was great, but he wanted to be more hands-on, and this was the surest path he could've ever set his foot on. "I'll fly, umma. You'll see."
